So it all started with the Toyota MR2 I was in need to change my road going car and decided I would indulge my love for sports cars and fell in love with the SW20 or MR2 MK2 , I test drove a neighbors car that he wanted to sell a limited edition standard 2L loved the looks and feel of the car and then doing some home work found out about the GT variant and felt the need to find and try one before parting with any cash . I was so pleased I did, I found one fell in love and she was mine.
Insurance! it was a bit high but then I found out about the http://www.mr2dc.com/ and there benefits, one being a lower insurance via being a member and a wealth of information available and everything I would ever need to know about every aspect of the full range of the MR2`s, little did I know at this point how much this would be needed.
So I enjoyed my Turbo for a few years then my love turned to another, a tuned, kitted MR2 Turbo with a few less years, my other car was a 91 rev one my new baby was a 97 rev 3, I at this point visited a few organized show events for MR2`s by the Drivers Club and at one we met Steve Vince on a stand with two little MR2 MK1 race cars. Stuart my partner had raced in 250 national karts for many years and it had been a dream of mine to race but I understood the costs involved so presumed it was never going to be and just watched in awe at those who did partake in the sport. Steve quoted us £5000.00 to own a race ready car and race for a year! We questioned him further and Stu was checking out the MK1`s toting up in his head parts and costs, we moved away after the chat and turned it over in our minds not for long, that night when we got back home guess who purchased a MK1 from Ebay? It started. That was in 2004 and I passed my ARDS test at Croft in 2005 in a Porsche and was on the start grid at Brands Hatch to start the 2005 season.
Race car 23 was born, the first year we raced with the "Road sports" and that consisted of Nobles, Morgan Aeros,Porsche 911 turbos and some other interesting classics we were with on the grid, it was an interesting year and I was privileged to be surrounded and learn to race with these guys and to learn from and become friends with such a top selection of people, and if ever a Mr J.Wapples reads this god bless you sir, he tried to learn me Brands Hatch in his own unique way and I will NEVER get right up behind a Porsche 911 turbo again on a down shift, I did eventually get the charring and smoke stain from the front of my little MK1, lesson learn t!
